Objective:To discuss the Modic changs of lumbar vertebra characteristic in Magnetic Resonance Diffusion-Weighted Imaging, and measure apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) values, exponential apparent diffusion coefficient (eADC) values, evaluating the clinical application value.Materials and Methods:108patients with Modic change(adding up to196end-plates, and sixty-eight percent locating the upper of the vertebral body.43cases of the Modic I changes involved80end-plates, three of them involving the number of the plates equal to or more than3;54cases of the Modic II changes involved97; three cases â…¢ were five; one Modic chang was mixed by I and III, one was I and II, the other six were difficult to distinguish types and involved10end-plates and50healthy volunteers, six cases of vertebral metastases, fourcases of acute fracture underwent conventional MR imaging and DWI. The conventional MR imaging sequences contained three-plane positioning scan, T1W imaging used fast gradient echo (FGE), T2W imaging fast recovery fast spin-echo (FRFSE). And add fat saturation when scanning T2WI-sag. Scanning DWI-sag when b-value was150,350,500s/mm2. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values and exponential apparent diffusion coefficient (eADC) values were calculated. The healthy volunteers chose the fifth lumbar vertebral. Modic changes I and II were divided into two groups by gender, divided into three groups by age:-40,40-60,60-. ADC values and eADC values of vertebral bodies were quantitatively analyzed and compared in the normal and abnormal groups. Results:The normal vertebral bodies were low signal in DWI, the Modic changes I were high signal, the Modic â…¡ and â…¢ were lower signal than the normal ones. The contrast and sensitivity of the image signals were better while b was150,350s/mm2. Date analyzed while b was150,350s/mm2:revealed that significant difference existed between the normal and the Modic changes, difference existed among the groups of Modic changes (P<0.001). There were no significant difference existed between groups of Modic changes divided by gender, age (p>0.05). The signals of the vertebral metastases, acute fracture and Modic â…  were similar, but date analysis revealed difference among them (P<0.001). Six mixed Modic change showed uneven high signal, date analysis revealed difference between ModicI and â…¡ (P<0.05).Conclusions:DWI could reveal the changes of the vertebral body signals, and offer ADC value, eADC value, DWI would be a supplementary means in diagnosing the Modic change.
