Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of acute disseminatedencephalomyelitis(ADEM),and discuss the relevance and differencebetween multiple sclerosis(MS)、 limbic encephalitis and acute viralencephalitis.Methods The records of59children diagnosed with ADEM inChildren‘s Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from Dec.2009toMay.2013were reviewed, and their medical history, clinical manifestation,laboratory, imaging and electro-neurophysiologyic findings were analyzed.Results Among the59children,28were boys,31were girls.39children had onset in winter and spring. The clinical manifestations werevarious, including consciousness (29cases,49.2%), ataxia (24cases,40.7%),paralysis (21cases,35.6%), fever(18cases,30.5%), sphincter dysfunction(12cases,20.3%), convulsion (6cases,13.6%), mental and behaviordisorders (7cases,11.9%), paresthesia (5cases,8.5%), and brainstem andcranial nerves involvement (18cases,30.5%).MRI shows multiple lesions.Most had favorable prognosis,2children had remission,1was diagnosed MS.Conclusions AEDM has a predominance in children less than10-yearold, and in winter and spring. The clinical manifestations are various, Mosthave favorable prognosis, and few has remission or progresses to MS. It’snecessary to have symptoms and radiographic follow-up.
