Ferula sinkiangensis K.M.Shen is a rare and endangered herb, which in Chinaonly distributed in xinjiang. The gum included in Chinese Pharmacopoeia is the gumof Ferula sinkiangensis K.M.Shen or Ferula fukangensis K.M.Shen.In recentyears, this valuable plant species is under an enormous pressure for survival forover-harvesting and taken as a plant of the second-class protection in the country. Atpresent,so many adulterants are mixed with the gum of Ferula sinkiangensis in themarket that the development and utilization for it is being very difficult. At present, thestudies of HPLC fingerprints may be the most effective means in controlling andevaluating the quality of Ferula gum,and it will have a extensive use.The aim of this study is to review the chemical constituents and pharmacologicalactivities of F. sinkiangensis’ gum and give it a comprehensive and qualitativeanalysis. The preliminary presumption gave is that the gum of F. sinkiangensts are richin protein, amino acid, peptide, reducing sugar, organic acid, saponin, triterpenesaponin, lactone, coumarin and coumarin glycoside, phytosterol, essential oil, grease andthis can provide reference for the chemical extraction. The gum of F. sinkiangensis were isolated by various kinds of chromatographictechniques(such as polyamide, recrystallization, macroporous, silica gel.).On the basisof physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, four compounds wereidentified as: farnesiferol C(1), farnesiferol B(2),β-sitosterol(3),ferulic acid(4).F. Sinkiangensis’gum from10different origins were extracted by ultrasonicmethod and analyzed with HPLC,and14common peaks were confirmed by using thegradient with acetonitrile-0.01%phosphoric acid water solution under the detectionwavelength of323nm,the mean value of similarity was over0.980.The method canbe used as the means to assess of HPLC fingerprints of Ferula sinkiangensisK.M.Shen.
