Objective: Through the clinical observation of treating ulcerative colitis (UC) ofdampness-heat pattern with Changqingshu decoction, to determine the clinicalcurative effect and safety of treating this disease and provide a reliable basis forclinical promotion and application of the decoction. Methods: The60patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided intotwo groups: the treatment group (30cases) and the control group (30cases). As therewas no significant difference between the two groups in gender, age, disease duration, disease severity, extent of pathological changes, etc., it was comparable (P>0.05). Thepatients in the treatment group were given orally traditional Chinesemedicine-Changqingshu decoction in the morning and evening respectively, one dosea day. The patients in the control group received sulfasalazine (SASP) therapy, withthe initial daily dose of2~3g orally given in3~4times a day. If there was noobvious discomfort, the drug could be gradually increased to4~6g a day, and aftersymptoms alleviated, it could be reduced to the maintenance dose of1.5~2g a day.One month was for a treatment course, and two courses were required for observation. In the end, the main symptoms, syndromes, intestinal mucosal conditions throughcolorectal endoscopic examination, adverse reactions and recurrence6months laterafter drug withdrawal were observed before and after treatment in both groups. Finally a statistical analysis of its curative effect was made.Results:(1) In regard of the comprehensive treatment, the treatment group had abetter improvement than the control group in clinical efficacy and Mayo index, andthe difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In the clinical efficacy, the totaleffective rate in treatment group was96.67%:20cases of relief,12cases ofeffectiveness,1case of ineffectiveness; the total effective rate in the control groupwas80%:12cases (remission),12cases (effectiveness),6cases (ineffectiveness).(2) In relieving UC major symptoms including diarrhea, stool with blood and pus, abdominal pains, and also in syndromes, the treatment group showed better effect thanthe control group; the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).(3) In terms ofimproving the conditions of the intestinal mucosa, the treatment group and the controlgroup had nearly same integral and curative effect, and the difference was notstatistically significant (P>0.05).(4) In the course of the treatment, there was no anyadverse reaction in the treatment group. Follow-up survey of six months after the endof treatment showed the recurrence rate in the treatment group was7.41%and the ratein the control group was36.36%. The recurrence rate of the former was significantlylower than that of the latter, and the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05).Conclusion: Changqingshu decoction can significantly relieve the clinical symptomsin the patients with ulcerative colitis of dampness-heat pattern and also promote theintestinal manifestations. With no obvious adverse reaction, the medicine has goodeffect with low recurrence rate in the short term; therefore, the clinical promotion issignificant.
