Objective Analysis the influence of current perception threshold (CPT) on the foramen area and the arm area by different frequency and time of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on Hegu. Compared the influence by different frequency and time of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It is Inferenced that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on Hegu can treat trigeminal neuralgia of the third branch. Methods Cheese30healthy adult volunteers, it gave different frequency (2Hz and100Hz)and different time (5minutes,10minutes and15minutes) of TENS to the Hegu, measured the CPT of the foramen area and the arm area on the same side before and after the treatment. It is to evaluate the effect of TENS and to find the best treatment frequency and time. Results The CPT of the foramen area increased after the TENS. The CPT of the arm area did not change obviously. After the low frequency(2Hz) of TENS5minutes,10minutes and15minutes treatment,5Hz CPT increased obviously. These treatments inhibited the slow pain significantly. After the high frequency(100Hz) of TENS5minutes,10minutes and15minutes treatment,5Hz and250Hz CPT increased obviously. These treatments inhibited both of the slow pain and the fast pain. These two frequency of TENS had no influence on2000Hz CPT. Thus, it was unacted on touch pressure sensation. The inhibition to the pain is more obviously influenced by the frequency of TENS than the time of TENS. Let us discuss the treatment time. In the100Hz TENS treatment group, it has great difference of5Hz CPT between the5minutes and15minutes (p<0.05).There were no differences in the other groups. Prolonged the treatment time of high frequency TENS to the slow pain can increase the effect of treatment. Prolonged the treatment time of other group had no effect. The inhibition to the pain is more obviously influenced by the frequency of TENS than the time of TENS.Conclusion The CPT of the foramen area increased after the TENS on Hegu. The CPT of the arm area had no change after the TENS on Hegu. It is confirmed the channel and point TENS can influence the CPT of the specific reaction area. The low frequency of TENS inhibited the slow pain significantly, the high frequency of TENS inhibited both of the slow pain and the fast pain. Prolonged the treatment time of high frequency TENS to the slow pain can increase the effect of treatment. Prolonged the treatment time of other group had no effect. Therefore, the choice of the appropriate frequency of the treatment is more important than extending the treatment time alone.
