Background and objectiveCataract is the main cause of blindness and low visual all over the world, theonly way to cure it is the cataract surgery. The main method of cataract surgery iscataract phacoemulsification extraction and intraocular lens implantation. Its purposeis to improve the visual acuity. During the long-term follow-up after cataract surgery,most patients’ postoperative visual acuity improved significantly. Some patients’postoperative vision acuity can’t meet the needs of the life or work, because it didn’tincrease obviously, and even did not improve. Blindness and low visual patients oftenhave unhealthy psychology and poor quality of life. For the purpose of decreasing theincidence of blindness and low visual, the causes and preventive methods ofblindness and low vision after cataract surgery should be analyzed. That can providereferences of diagnosis and preventive treatments of blindness and low vision aftercataract surgery.Materials and Methods1. The complete data of991eyes of915consecutive cases from April2011toMarch2013were collected. They were treated with cataract phacoemulsificationextraction and intraocular lens implantation in Ophthalmology Department of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University.2. The best corrected visual acuity, the eyes and percentage of blindness and lowvisual were recorded at1d,7d,30d and90d after operation. The causes ofblindness and low visual were confirmed by the examinations of slit lamp, intraocularpressure, funduscopy, OCT and FFA.3. The causes and preventive methods of blindness and low vision after thesurgery were retrospectively analyzed.Results1. The condition of surgery: All patients were treated with cataractphacoemulsification extraction surgery. In addition to16eyes of traumatic cataractand4eyes of posterior capsular rupture were treated with secondary intraocular lensimplantation, all eyes were treated with immediate intraocular lens implantation.There were13eyes of posterior capsular rupture. All patients were without retinaldetachment.2. The condition of post-operation: All patients were treated with TobramycinDexamethasone eye drops and eye ointments four times a day in two weeks, andDiclofenac Sodium eye drops four times a day in three months after cataract surgery.Patients of corneal edema, transient high intraocular pressure and other eye diseaseswere treated after cataract surgery.3. The eyes and percentage of blindness and low vision at different times aftercataract surgery: The blindness and low vision were found in183eyes (18.47%),138eyes (13.92%),121eyes (12.21%) and113eyes (11.40%) at1d,7d,30d and90dafter surgery respectively.4. The surgical complications which cause blindness and low vision aftercataract surgery were corneal edema, transient high intraocular pressure, posteriorcapsular rupture, posterior capsular opacification, and macular edema, etc.5. The main causes of blindness and low vision after cataract surgery werepreoperative original eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, high myopia,glaucomatous optic atrophy and age-related macular degeneration, etc.Conclusions1. The causes of blindness and low vision after cataract surgery were surgical complications and preoperative original eye diseases. The main causes werepreoperative original eye diseases.2. The main preventive and therapeutic method of blindness and low vision aftercataract surgery is continuous treating preoperative original eye diseases.3. The incidence of blindness and low vision after cataract surgery can bedecreased by strictly controlling the surgical indications, electing the appropriatesurgical timing and reducing surgical complications.4. The follow-up after cataract surgery is very important, by which the eyediseases of blindness and low vision can be found and treated immediately.5. The comprehensive assessment of postoperative visual acuity before cataractsurgery can reduce the medical disputes...
