P. fortunei(Seem.) is the fruit of P. tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud. that belongs to thescrophulariaceae family. In china there are7kinds of Paulownia plants as followes: P. Sieb. etZucc., P. fortunei(Seem.) Hemsl., P. tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud., P. elongata S. Y. Hu, P.catalpifolia Gong Tong, P. taiwaniana T. W. Hu.&H.J. Chang, P. fargesii Franch, P.australisGong Tong. Compendium of Materia Medica records that the fruits of P. tomentosa (Thunb.)Steud. can treat asthma. Modern medical research shows that its fruit has antibacterial,anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor andinsecticidal effect. Objective: To investigate the chemical constituents of the fruits of P. tomentosa (Thunb.)Steud.To do some primary research of the effect on antioxidation of some constituents. Methods: The95%ethanol extract of the fruits of P. tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud. wereisolated and purified by using of silica gel, Sephadex LH-20column chromatography, TLCpreparation and recrystallization. The constituents s structures were identified on the basis oftheir chemical and physical properties as well as the spectra data of ESI-MS,1H-NMR and13C-NMR etal, compared with data reported in literatures. Results:Eighteen compounds were isolated and their structures were identified as followes:ursolic acid (I), paulownin (II),20,24,25-trihydroxydammarane-3-one (III), daucosterol (IV),palmitic acid (V),2α,3α,19-trihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (VI),5,7,4′-trihydroxy-3′-methoxyflavone (VII), luteolin (VIII), vanillic acid (IX), isovanillic acid (X), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (XI), apigenin (XII), β-sitosterol (XIII),3′-methoxyluteolin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (XIV), Tricin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (XV), diplacone(XVI),3′,4′,5,7-tetrahydroxy-6-[7-hydroxy-3,7-dimethyl-2(E)-octenyl] flavanone (XVII),quercetin (XVIII). Through preliminary judgment Compound XIX is a new compound.Compounds III、VI、IX、X、XI、XIV were isolated from the Paulownia genus for the firsttime. Compounds II、XV were isolated from the fruits of Paulownia tomentosa for the firsttime. The investigation on antioxidant effect of the fruits of Paulownia tomentosa showd thatthe compounds luteolin, quercetin, diplacone showed great anticancer activities. Conclusions: Eighteen compounds were isolated from the fruits of P.tomentosa. CompoundXI was new compound. Compounds III、VI、IX、X、XIV were isolated from the Paulowniagenus for the first time. Compounds II、XV were isolated from the fruits of P.tomentosa forthe first time. The investigation on antioxidant effect of the fruits of P.tomentosa that thecompounds apigenin, luteolin, Tricin-7-O-β-D-glucoside, quercetin, diplacone showedantioxidant activity.
