ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effectivity of the treatment of closed reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws fixation in Sanders type â…¡ calcaneal fractures. To compare the outcomes of Sanders type II calcaneal fracture treated with the closed reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws fixation versus those with open reduction and internal fixation via extensile lateral approach.MethodsRetrospective analysis some Sanders typeâ…¡ calcaneal fracture cases who had been treated by the above two methods in the trauma center of our hospital from September2010through March2014, The age, sex, hospital costs and hospitalization time, Bohler angle, Gissane angle, wound complication, function scores such as American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society ankle-hindfoot scale were compared.ResultsFifty-one patients (fifty-three fractures)who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Thirty-two fractures in thirty-one patients were treated using closed reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws fixation (the PRIF group), and twenty-one feet in twenty patients were treated with open reduction and internal fixation through extensile lateral approach (the ORIF group). There was no statistically significant difference between the PRIF group and the ORIF group on American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society ankle-hindfoot scale, Bohler angle, Gissane angle. But, the hospital costs, operation time and hospitalization time, wound complication in the ORIF group was significantly higher than the PRIF group.ConclusionClinical results were similar between calcaneal fractures treated with the closed reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws fixation compared with open reduction and internal fixation through extensile lateral approach. However, the closed reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws fixation had a significantly lower incidence of wound, hospital costs, operation time and hospitalization time. The closed reduction and percutaneous cannulated screws fixation was a valuable method for the treatment of Sanders typeâ…¡ calcaneal fractures.
