Objective:To investigate the expression and significance of S100protein (S100A4) and matrix metalloproteinase-2(MMP-2) in cervical squamous carcinoma, and to analyze their effect and significance in the process of development, invasion and metastasis of cervical squamous carcinoma combining the clinicopathological features, provide a observation index in the evaluation of malignant degree and prognosis for cervical squamous carcinoma. Methods:The SP immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of S100A4and MMP-2in15cases of normal cervical tissues and60cases of cervical squamous carcinoma, to analyze their correlations and relations of the expression and clinicopathological of S100A4protein and MMP-2in cervical squamous carcinoma. Results:(1) S100A4was not expressive in normal cervical tissues. The positive expression rates of S100A4was41.67%(25/60) and the negative one was58.33%(35/60) in cervical squamous carcinoma. The expression of S100A4was positively correlated with the clinical stage lymph node metastases and the diameter of tumor (P<0.05), but not with grade of tumor and age (P>0.05).(2) The positive expression rates of MMP-2was20.00%(3/15) in normal cervical tissues. The positive expression rates of MMP-2was88.33%(53/60) and the negative one was11.67%(7/60) in cervical squamous carcinoma. The expression of MMP-2was positively correlated with the clinical stage and lymph node metastases (P<0.05), but not with grade of tumor, the diameter of tumor and age (P>0.05).(3) The expression of S100A4was positive correlated to MMP-2in cervical squamous carcinoma(r=0.374, P<0.01).Conclusions:S100A4protein and MMP-2maybe played a role in development, invasion and metastasis in cervical squamous carcinoma; In this process S100A4may raise MMP-2expression, so we supposed that S100A4may be an important predictor of the clinic pathologic features of cervical carcinoma.
