Chimonanthus praecox L. (wintersweet) is a traditional fragrant plant that originates from China, and is a well-known winter-flowering deciduous shrub. The plant can be taken as a new source of natural essential oil. Now, little research was reported on its essential oil extraction. The extration of natural flavor from C. praecox flowers was carried out in the present research. The essential oil was obtained from both of fresh and dry C. praecox flowers by simultaneous distillation extraction method, the compounds and relative contents of essential oil were analysised by GC/MS. The various procedure effects on the extraction and the composition were studied. The result is described as follows:(1) According to orthogonal experiment, the optimistic combination of extraction rate for simultaneous distillation extraction technology was: fresh sample , extraction time 5h,immention time 5h, material to water ratio 1:30, the extraction rate reached 0.7%; dried sample , extraction time 5h,immention time 5h, material to water ratio 1:40, the extraction rate reached 0.85%.(2) Study condition of dewaxing with suluent and preserve time. The best condition is solvent volume (mL) and the quantity of rough oil (g) ratio of 30:1, -20℃to maintain 5 hours.(3) The methods of quantity-determination and quality-determination of Chimonanthus essential oil with GC/MS were established. A total of 45 and 41 compounds were identified in fresh C. praecox flower and dry C. praecox flower, respectively, representing 92.623% and 87.078% of the total peak area. These chemical constituents mainly included Caryophyllene, Longifolene,α-Famesene,β-Elemene, Germacrene D. The main components of volatile oil from Dried samples did not change significantly.(4) Different florescence essential oil extracted with the same condition and comparison of extraction rate. The highest extraction rate of essential oil is at half-blooming, reached 0.602%, and at blooming reached 0.596%.The extraction rate of essential oil at forepart blooming and late blooming have been decreased to 0.312% and 0.237%. Therefore, in order to ensure a better quality ,it is better time to picked C. praecox flowers on bloom and before. C. praecox flowers were used as raw material to extract the essential oil, by using the simultaneous distillation extraction. It is of great value to accelerate the development of the basic research.
