To discuss the limiting factor of artificial afforestation and the driving force of tree growth in limestone mountain area to choose the right land preparation measures and surface cover of artificial afforestation. Taken Yanzhuang Xintai as test area, the tree increment, the soil physical regime, the hydrological effect, the water accumulation benefits by different land preparation measures and surface cover before and after afforestation be studied to analyze the driving force to choose the best rebuilding mode in limestone mountain area. The result showed that:(1)the main limiting factor of artificial afforestation on degraded mountainous area were in the order of soil thickness, slope, slope position, soil water content, soil porosity, soil nutrient content, slope length, altitude.(2): The driving force of tree growth was mainly in soil physical properties, soil hydrology effect and soil nutrient content, the soil bulk density inhibitor was negative correlation with tree growth, but others such as the soil water content, the soil porosity, the soil water storage, the soil organic matter and the nutrient elements were accelerated to tree growth.(3): the specification of soil preparation was in the order of 40cm×40cm×30cm,50cm×50cm×40cm,30cm×30cm×30 cm, the scale ripple was the best land preparation method, next came the level-terrace site preparation, the pit-like site preparation was the poorest.(4):the best scheme of transformation of the limiting factor of tree growth was covering with grass, next came the mulching with plastic film, the soil loosen was the poorest.
