Waterscape plants are very important natural resources, it has a variety of functions, not only can beautify the environment around us, and also can protect and improve the environment, such as purifying water quality, conserving soil and water, improve local microclimate, and many other effects. Waterscape plants are very distinctive elements in garden plant landscape, the plant landscape seems very natural and clever with the participation of the water. Waterscape plants play a very important role to adjust urban ecological balance and maintain ecological stability, beautify the environment and express the features of region.As ecological landscape deeply affects the minds of people in the cities, ecological waterscape garden is becoming more and more popular. Waterscape plant is an important carrier to waterscape expression. It play an important role to improve surrounding climate and beautify the atmosphere of waters. Based on the reasonable water plants selection and scientific configuration, make full use of the waterscape plants advantages and characteristics, and protect the natural feature of waterscape, to make the plant landscape foster both meet people aesthetic and also reach the demand of ecology. Due to the dry cold climate characteristics in north of China, it makes it a bit more difficult for waterscape plants in landscape application than some cities in southern of China, and the scope of the waterscape plants choice are smaller, this situation requires us increase the species of northern waterscape plants and pay more attention to it.This study first define the scope of the water plants concept, make a classification of waterscape plants and express the characteristics of different types of waterscape plants, summary and expand the common waterscape plant species in the north, including aquatic plants and wetland plants; analysis and summary the existing problems of waterscape plant application status in north of China. through the research of waterscape plant ecological functions, analysis waterscape plant function in water purification, soil and water conservation, improving the local environment, protection of biodiversity and other ecological aspects, combined the integrated applications in garden waterscape plant, summed up the configuration principles and methods applied to waterscape plants in northern areas; then demonstrated theories and methods through the study of an example, the specific objectives are as follows:(1)Combed the current developing trends of waterscape plant applications, through the analysis of waterscape plant configuration of some northern areas, found that the current exist problem is that the waterscape plants species applied in north China is less, the plant Landscape structure is monotonous, and the season features are not obvious. through reading literature and field surveys.Summaryed the waterscape plant species suitable for the application of north area,broadened the range of plants in north waterscape application, provided a richer choice in northern waterscape plant application.(2)Through the analysis and research on the ecological characteristics of waterscape plant, applied ecological functions of the waterscape plants to the water plant landscape, summarized and collated morphological characteristics, ecological effects, garden applications of the waterscape plant species that applied in the northern areas, to get a more detailed research and summary, such as reed, sagittaria, salix, shuicong, and some other waterscape plants which have high ecological value, provide a reference and guidance for the future design of waterscape plant configuration in north area.( 3) By the study of plant landscaping principles and garden art practices,proposed principles and methods that can be applied to north waterscape plant configuration design according to geographical features, to make a reasonable allocation of waterscape plants for different situations, such as the size of the water, the depth of the water,the types of the water and so on. At the same time consider the effects of colors and flowering on seasonal features and viewing period when design; join regional culture into plant distribution to enhance the geographical features of the landscape.(4)Based on actual cases, argumentation the theory and analysis the methods, retain native plants as much as possible when designed, considering the ecological functions and ornamental characteristics of waterscape plant, build an ecology and sustainable water plant landscape with cultural connotation and the characteristics of north area, provide a reference and guidance for the future design of waterscape plant configuration in north area.
