In this paper, according to the characteristics of the flow field in straw checkerboard barrier, the large eddy simulation (LES) and discrete element method (DEM) are used simulate the characteristics of flow field and the dispersion characteristics of sand particles in the straw checkerboard barriers. Parts of the results were verified by the results of wind tunnel experiment. Through the analysis of the wind speed, particles’ velocity and the sand transport rate at different position in straw checkerboard barrier, we found that the sand transport rate in the barrier is very little than the inlet position, which means the straw checkerboard barriers have great capability to block the moving sand particles. At the same time, the contour map about velocity of the flow field in the horizontal, which presents the distribution of non-uniform vortex in straw checkerboard barriers was clearly drawn. From the contour map it can be seen that the non-uniform vortex has very important influence on the effect of sand movement in straw checkerboard barriers.
