Outstanding varieties, can both achieve high yield in favorable or adverse environmental conditions called "good adaptability". The difference between the yield of maize mainly comes from the interaction of genotype and environment, which reflects the variety adaptability to different environments. Objective evaluation and identification of different maize varieties adaptability has great practical significance for maize breeding and regional distribution. In this paper, commonly Francis-Kannenberg model, Eberhart-Russell model, AMMI model, high stability coefficient method and non-parametric method were adopted to evaluating stability and adaptability of 11 maize varieties in 2 density, meanwhile physiological characteristics as material production, energy use, and grain filling of different maize varieties were analyzed to reveal the intrinsic link between adaptation and physiological characteristics. The main results as follows:1. The yield performance of 11 maize varieties each point represented significant difference in 2 density, the grain yield of which increased in high density were maize varieties XY335, CX712, SD609, ZD958, NH101, SD616 and CS106. Varieties XY335, CX712, SD609 were higher than the average yield of all tested varieties, showed high yield potential and good density tolerance.2. In the 11 tested varieties, the variation coefficient of ZD958 was smaller in both density while CS106, SD616(Regional test density) and NH101, SD616(Regional test density +) were high; The regression coeff- icient of LD-9 and ZJ-8 were greater than 1, other varieties showed better stability.3.Maize varieties XY335, CX712, SD609, ZD958, XY6028 had high stability coefficient(HSCi) in both density, the higher yield index(Pi) and smaller stability index(Si)of which were varieties XY335, CX712, SD609, ZD958. The result of AMMI model analysis showed varieties XY335, SD609 owned higher and stable grain yield, while LD-9, ZJ-8, CS106 did not.4.The results of UPGMA Cluster Analysis showed that 11 tested maize varieties could be divided into six categories: Ⅰ XY335, CX712, SD609 were high and stable yield varieties; Ⅱ XY6028, Ⅲ NH101, SD616, Ⅳ ZD958, were intermediate varieties; Ⅴ LD-9, KX3564, and ZJ-8, Ⅵ CS106 belonged to low-yield and unstable varieties.4. Result of physiological characteristics of different adaptability maize varieties analysis showed that the dry matter accumulation, light interception, photosynthetic rate, grain filling rate and duration after flowering were higher than ZJ-8 and LD-9, especially in high-density condition, the ability of which is more prominent.
