| Plant polyphenols were proved had healthy function in scavenging free radicals in thebody, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity. In this study, seven wildLilium species were used as the materials (Lilium lancifolium, L.brownii, L.delavayi L.davidii,L.duchartrei, L.sargentiae, L.sulphureum). The contents of total phenolics, total flavonoidsand total flavanols were measured and the antioxidant capacity of lily bulb extracts wereevaluated by using the methods of atomic absorption spectroscopy, high-performance liquidchromatography, which would lay the foundation of further development and utilization to theresources of wild Lilium species as on functional foods. The main results in this study are asfollows:(1) The contents of total phenolics, total flavonoids and total flavanols of lily bulbextracts were investigated according to the colorimetric analysis, which ranging from4102.76to9033.78mg GAE/100g dw,1606.80to3481.14mg RE/100g dw,456.06to2602.60mg CE/100g dw, respectively. The L.sulphureum had the highest contents of polyphenols followedby L.sargentiae, while the L.duchartrei had the lowest.(2) Four antioxidant assays in vitro (ABTS radical scavenging capacity, DPPH radicalscavenging capacity, reducing power and inhibition of lipid peroxidation) were carried outwith the bulb extracts of seven wild Lilium species in this study. The results showed that allbulb extracts exhibited strong antioxidant activities, which correlated positively with totalphenolic content (r=0.26to0.92), total flavonoid content (r=0.82to1.00) and total flavanolcontent (r=0.65to0.93).(3) Ten kinds of phenolic constituents were identified and quantified using externalstandards by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), including cyanidin3-rutinoside chloride,(+)-catechin, chlorogenic acid,(-)-epicatechin, dihydromyricetin, rutin,P-coumaric acid, dihydroquercetin, eriodictyol and kaempferol. The differences of phenoliccompounds contents and types were significant among Lilium genotypes. Hierarchical clusteranalysis classified seven Lilium species into two groups. L.sargentiae and L.sulphureumbelonged to one group, which showed better radical scavenging capacity, reducing power,inhibition of lipid peroxidation and were high in phenolic contents. The other species belonged to another group, which showed lower phenolic compounds contents and weakerantioxidant capacities.These strongly demonstrate that lily bulbs could be used as a potential source of effectiveantioxidant agents, especially for pharmaceutical application. |
