This study analyzed the Lawsonia intracellularis (LI) infectioncondition in pigs of various age stages from different farms in Zhejiang andHenan Provinces, by fecal nested PCR. A medication program was alsostudied in controlling Porcine Proliferative Enteritis (PPE) by TiamulinFumarate.Result: In this study,226fresh fecal samples of3-6,7,9,11,13,17week-old pigs, gilts and sows were collected from intensive farms. The LIprevalence was investigated by fecal nested PCR. The results showed thatthe average prevalence of PPE was28.3%out of226samples.LI was found in all farms, down to4-week-old piglets and up to highparity sows. All13-week-old groups were found positive, the averagepositive rate is44%. However, the average rate increased to50%in19-week-old groups as well as67%in gilts. Sows LI infection was detectedin80%farms (33.3%in average). So LI infection rate is considerable high inmany intensive farms even with good management, especially13-week-old stage, gilts and sows. The field efficacy of Tiamulin Fumarate (Denagard) medication wasevaluated in controlling PPE. Fecal PCR test showed that the bacterialprevalence rate in the medication groups (in feed or water) was significantly decreased after14days medication compring to the positivecontrol group. The healthy status, feed conversion efficiency and averagedaily weight gain of medication groups were increased, too. Thehistopathologic and immunohistochemical test further showed thatmedication decreased the intestinal mucosal cell proliferation and LIinfection. In conclusion, all above data indicated that Tiamulin Fumaratemedication effectively controlled PPE in field.
