With the development of the solid state light source Lighting Emitting Diodes(LED)in the field of lighting, lighting effects of LED array are also getting better and better. But because of its own characteristics and luminescence properties of structure, there are still some defects. The studies of illumination and shadow problem have been the focus of the research recently. In order to obtain better illumination uniformity and less multi-shadow width, we need to improve the method of optical design and optimize the lighting effects. So we mainly introduce a new LED array optical design and optimization method in this paper. Some experiments are designed by applying the Taguchi method and simulated via the TracePro software. After that, the ANOVA theory is integrated to evaluate the influence of the control factors on the illumination, so that the control factors can be optimized efficiently. The results provide an effective theoretical basis and research directions for the improvement of the LED array lighting effects.Firstly, in order to analyze the control factors of the LED array illumination on the curved surface plate, the experimental results show that the number of LEDs is the main influence on both illuminance uniformity(81.84%) and maximum illumination(91.58%). Furthermore, the best combination of the control factors can be got by adjusting the angle between the LED chips and the optical axis. In comparison with other methods, the advantages of Taguchi method are obvious.Secondly, in order to analyze the control factors of the LED array multi-shadow on the curved surface plate, the experimental results show that the number of LEDs is the main influence on multi-shadow( 50.17%) and the optimum combination of minimum multi-shadow is 1.29 mm. Furthermore,we can get the best combination of the control factors by adjusting the angle between the LED chips and the optical axis.At last, according to the high thickness and low illumination uniformity of traditional direct type LED panel light, a design of direct type LED panel light with the curved surface is proposed. The experimental results show that the arrangement of LEDs has the most influence on the uniformity of illumination and the average illumination, which account 47.4% and 50.2% respectively. After the parameters are determined, a new type panel light with 25 mm thick is designed and it is thinner than the current one. Furthermore, the uniformity of illumination on the diffusion plate is 88.3%. After simulating the illumination of conference room, the results completely conform to the national building lighting standards. We provide a theoretical basis to design a direct type LED panel light.
