With the development of our country’s economy and society, more and more projects are built in the mountainous area. Although has been in gravel stratum in the successful construction of a many tunnel projects, but on gravel tunnel especially large-span shallow bias tunnel research rarely, of construction process in mechanical transformation mechanism is not fully grasp. In this paper, west tunnel of Maoshan Mountain project as the project background, firstly, the finite element software ANSYS was used to simulate west tunnel of Maoshan Mountain. And through similar model test and numerical simulation to simulate the combined research methods of tunnel excavation research methods were compared and analyzed. According to the layer of gravel soils across a shallow buried highway tunnel construction safety and stability of the key problems to carry out a systematic and in-depth study.According to the formation of west tunnel of Maoshan Mountain according to similar material selection principle, carry out similar material ratio of orthogonal test, meet the conditions for west tunnel of Maoshan Mountain to develop similar stratum similar material, which laid a foundation for model test.Through analyzing the results of numerical simulation, selected gravel soil with large span shallow bias tunnel model test, the most reasonable excavation scheme for analysis of tunnel surrounding rock support and internal stress after excavation.Through the model test data and numerical simulation results are analyzed, which verified the reliability of the model test.
