A Preliminary Research On The Designing And Techniques Of Urban Roof-greening

As a result of on-going urbanization process in China, both the population density and the number the concrete buildings in the major cities increase significantly, thereby generating a series of environmental problems for their dwellers.Therefore, it is crucial that a solution to these serious problems should be adopted to improve the ecological system of urban areas, freeing the cities from influences of the Urban Heat Island Effect(UHI Effect). Green Roofs(Roof-greening) in urban areas come as an effective and practical way of extending greening coverage multidimensionally, not only because it helps soften the outlines of the buildings, but also helps nourish the ecological environment at the micro-level.Based on a case study of a roof-greening project(National Base for Digital Publishing of Xi’an, which is one of the mega cities in the Northwest of China), the article intends to throw a preliminary analysis on the existing designing and engineering techniques of Green Roofs, thereby helping shed light on a new pathway in the methodology of roof-greening in the Northwest of China.
