Chinese traditional building using a wooden frame as the main structure, the wall doesn’t carry the building’s weight just for the shielding effect. That’s why we could make as many windows as we want. As the wood construction technology continues to mature, Chinese artisan created a wood construct modular system, which contains Tenon-joint structure and Brackets structure —— the most interest parts of Chinese traditional building. The modular system makes the construction much more easier, artisan use less time to finish more work. Using wood as the main construction material is very wise, for example, the construction process is easy and fast, the modern concepts, it’s no harmful to the environment. But we have to realize that wood has its shortage, it’s flammable and easily eroded. According to historical records, a lot famous historical wood constructions destroyed by the fire, the weathering, the worm eating, the overwhelming pressure and so on.Recently the experts pay much more attention on the ancient architecture protection and repair work, they ask for high tech applications to protect the ancient wood architectures from the damage by wrong function. In this paper, we introduce a new high tech application of NDT(Non-destructive Testing), which ends up the old time of Manual inspecting. This technology could detect the internal defects of wood structure more precisely. The test report provides us a credible conclusion which help us to make rigorous plan.This study based on the National Natural Science Foundation Project "the suitability of the key study of the damage detection of north ancient wood-structure architecture "(project no. 10066000201201). The experiment materials were selected from Beijing、Shanxi Province and AnHui Province, we chose wood from Pinus sp、Abies、 Picea spp、Ulmus spp、 Pinus taiwanensis Hayata(Latin name) species. These wood specimens were prepared based on GB/T1929-2009、GB/T1936-2009、GB/T1933-2009 and GB/T1935-2009 standards. Stress wave speed and micro-drilling tests were first conducted on all specimens, we focus on choosing the most suitable tech to breakthrough the current accuracy of wood DNT technology, follow by mechanical tests we also analyzed to examine the influences of wood moisture content, grain orientation, and decay on wood property prediction.All these experiments based on the only national standard——《Ancient Wooden Structure Building Maintenance And Strengthening Technical Specifications》, we aimed at providing comprehensive security test assessment and promoting the ancient architecture protecting standard.
