A majority of HVDC transmission lines are located in wild areas, line trips caused by forest fire have reduced the operation reliability of power grid. At present, external insulation of forest fire smoke mainly rely on line-ground gap discharge simulation test in laboratory, seldom involve simulation analyses. Meanwhile, the existing forest fire monitoring methods have many disadvantages. This paper has presented simulation of different types of external insulation characteristics of transmission line brought about by smoke, then put forward a new method based on laser lidar technique for forest fire monitoring, and presented experimental study, in the end, the installation scheme of laser lidar device has been designed. The major studies are listed as follows:(1) The two-dimensional axisymmetric model of composite insulator has been established, simulation analysis of electric field characteristics of insulator in forest fire smoke environment have been done by finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics.(2) Simulation test of forest fire smoke monitoring by Laser lidar has been carried out, and the corresponding mathematical models have been set up to solve the distribution and spreading characteristics of forest fire and smoke.(3) The transformation, installation and maintenance schemes of Laser lidar device in transmission environment have been put forward.This paper has studied the effect of smoke particles on electric field distribution by simulation analyses, and put forward a new method to monitor forest fire smoke by laser lidar, then verified its feasibility, at last, the best way to install forest fire monitoring device on transmission line has been presented, which provides a new idea for forest fire monitoring in transmission line.
