The cause of many fire accidents of power cable is mostly due to the increment of contact resistance, which is caused by the poor contact of the cable joints. When the joints temperature increases, the joints contact will become poorer. If the situation isn’t monitored, it will lead to the cable fires and great economical loss. Thus, on-line monitoring of the cable joints temperature is especially important.An on-line temperature monitoring system for power cable joints based on low voltage power line carrier (PLC) communication is proposed in this thesis. The system includes the monitoring terminal of cable joints temperature, the monitoring master station of cable joints temperature and the data management platform. The low voltage PLC, which relies on the power line network without rewiring and has the characteristics of low construction and operation cost, is used between the monitoring terminal and the monitoring master station. The GPRS wireless communication is used between the monitoring master station and the data management platform. The data management platform is composed of the function blocks such as data display, graphical display, early alarming, data storage, historical data querying, and so on.The system is tested under the laboratory conditions. The results show that the developed system has the characteristic such as high measuring accuracy, high realtime, reliable communication, low maintenance and so on.
