In the process of urban development, many original villages were annexed by the city and became the city’s historical communities with the continuous urban expansion. They have the complete traditional village style and also retains the culture and customs of the locals.With the focus on the urban development move from the new town to the old district,renovation of these historic communities have begun to attract attention.How to make the historical communities both adapt to the city and retain its unique character and historical cultural value becomes very meaningful.In the traditional transformation of the old model, the government-led or the developer-led large-scale urban renewal were the dominant. However, a bottom-up and spontaneous transformation of the old model slowly came into sight. Tian Zi Fang in Shanghai and Tzengtsu in Xiamen are the representatives of this way people began to get recognition. This kind of transformation not only provides a new transformation idea for historical cities, but also gives full play to the vitality of the private sector to increase the city’diversity. This article analyzes the historical environmental requirements causes of the spontaneous transformation cases, sums up its architectural transformation means, provides suggestions for various roles, and hopes that it could bring inspiration for other cities’ historical community transformation though the study of Xiaba Village in Dongguan and analysis of causes, policy environment, building renovation, etc., based on the field research interviews, literature study and comparative study, and other research tools.The first part outlines the background and significance of the research, defines the city’s historical community, spontaneity, transformation and other concepts, and establishes the scope of the study. The framework of the paper is based on this to review and systemize research at home and abroad.The second part describes the basic overview and history of Xiaba Village, analyzes the history of environmental causes of spontaneous build generated.The third part introduces the history of spontaneous transformation, analyzes its transformation techniques, summarizes the characteristics of its transformation, and analyzes the interests of all aspects of government, residents, businesses and visitors in thereconstruction.The fourth part analyzes comparatively Xiaba Village in Dongguan through two different development model case studies to sum up the causes and characteristics of spontaneous transformation occurred.The fifth part summarizes the principles and strategy of historical community transformation, and provides some suggestion for the government, residents and businesses and other stakeholders.At last, I give some suggestions and expectation to the architect of whom take part in the spontaneous build.The sixth part is the summary and discussion of the article.
