The ancient buildings have condensed the wisdom and sweat of our country’s building craftsmen and left a long and splendid civilization in the past five thousand years. The ancient Chinese architecture, which includes the precious traditional culture, is beautiful and highly skilled. Although the ancient buildings suffered from destruction and damage, the whole structure is in proper condition. However, the special components and nodes also suffered a very large damage. The column base damage and dovetail destruction is the most common failure of the ancient timber structure.This paper is based on six level wooden model of YinZaoFaShi. The simulation experiment includes two column frame and four column frame. In accordance with “Technical code for maintenance and strengthening of ancient timber buildings”, the ancient building damage experiments which includes column base damage and dovetail destruction is designed.First of all, research status and important results is analyzed through plenty of literature. The material properties and constitutive models of wood areintroduced. The damage mechanism of dovetail joint is based on embedded interactions and the model is conducted by Solid Works2014 and ABAQUS6.14.In two column experiments, with the increase of the vertical load, the overall stiffness of the structure increases and the seismic energy dissipation capacity is greatly improved. Compared with no damage model, the overall vibration isolation ability of structure which has little influence on the overall stiffness is affected by the column base damage. On the other hands, as to dovetail destruction, stiffness change trend of the whole structure and load-bearing capacity of the building in the larger horizontal load is weakened.The dovetail destruction is more important to the stiffness of the whole structure.In further experiments, in order to make a research on the dovetail damage, four column model is conducted and the results shows that the dovetail joint makes the structure as a whole. As a result of the node damage, the overall stiffness of the structure is reduced and slip is increasing.Whether the column damaged or dovetail damaged, the seismic performance of the overall structure will be reduced. However, the dovetail damage is key factor of overall stiffness changes. This research can provide a reference for ancient building protection.
