With the development of interconnected power system, the structure of power network is increasingly complex. Power system security and stability analysis is also becoming more and more difficult. And to reduce the complexity of the operation of power system, it is necessary to replace individual components with transmission sections as the monitor and control target. However, there are a lot of transmission sections after grid partition and it is really difficult to focus on monitoring all of the transmission sections in a complex large power grid. Thus, it is necessary to choose transmission sections which greatly affect the operation of the power grid, called key transmission sections, as objects for monitoring and controling.Firstly, this paper studied the method for discovery of transmission section in power system. Based on the principle of network partition, this paper proposed an improved Dijkstra algorithm-based method for partitioning power network. And then analyzed the relationship between the transmission section and grid partition and proposed a general method and procedure for discovery of transmission section. Secondly, this paper studied the method for discovery of key transmission section in power system. After defining the key transmission section, this paper studied and discussed three kinds of definition of weights for edges:the weight based on topological structure, the weight based on electrical distance and the weight based on the electrical distance and the power flow distribution and proposed a method for discovery of key transmission section based on the normalized cut. And evaluation indexes of key transmission section are also established.Lastly, simulation results on the CEPRI-36 test system and actual system show that the method of finding the key transmission sections based on the normalized cut is feasible and effective.
