Road traffic flow is composed of drivers and vehicles, which impacts the vehicles, the road elements, and the overall environment in unique ways. Different classified roads’ traffic flow show different characteristics. At present, researches on traffic flow at home and abroad are concentrated on basic segment of highways and urban expressways, while studies on the basic segment of urban arterial roads are less. The traffic environment of highways and urban ex pressways are relatively simple as the traffic composition is relatively single and the transverse interference is less, while the urban arterial road’s traffic environment is more complex. Besides, as a connection of the city’s main districts, urban arterial is the aorta of urban transport network, accounting for a large proportion of the urban road network and bearing the city’s traffic operation of a large number of vehicles. Weather the urban arterials are smooth or not, the efficiency of the whole tran sport network will be directly affected. Therefore, the study on characteristics of the basic segment of urban arterials is necessary.Driver’s lane-changing behavior is a common driving behavior when they are driving. Driver’s lane-changing behavior is influenced by driver’s own factors, road conditions, factors of vehicle characteristics and the traffic flow state, while the driver’s lane-changing behavior can affect the traffic flow accordingly. Urban arterial roads are the path chosen frequently when pe ople go out. Therefore, there must be an analysis of driver’s lane-changing characteristics on the urban arterial roads, to study the impact of the driver’s lane-changing behavior on road traffic flow, so as to further analyze the traffic flow characteristics of urban arterials. This paper’s main research contents are as follows:(1) The method of aerial imaging was used in this paper to collect the road traffic data of typical arterial roads of Changsha during the peak periods. And combining Corel Video Studio Pro software system with the method of artificial statistics, the data collected wasmeticulously processed in the later stages, from which the headway information of each vehicle and the speed information of each vehicle can be obtained. Meanwhile, vehicles changing lanes on the road were signed and specific information for each vehicle was recorded in this work.(2) A new methodology is proposed in this paper to synthetically recognize car-following status by the relationship between the speed differen ce and the headway of the flowing vehicle, and considering the variation of standard deviation of the speed difference between the leading car and the flowing car on the different lanes.(3) The characteristics of the time headway, the speed, the speed dif ference of vehicles under car-following status, the relationship between the speed and the headway of the flowing vehicle, the speed difference of the leading vehicle and the following vehicle and the headway, et al, were analyzed by the use of SPSS statis tical analysis software, MATLAB software and Origin drawing software.(4) The vehicle’s lane-changing behaviors, including lane-changing rate, lane-changing durations and gap acceptance were studied in this paper by combining the vehicle’s behavior characteristics with the road traffic flow’s characteristics of the city’s arterial roads. And the influence of the vehicle’s lane-changing behavior on the headway, the relationship between the number of lane-changing behaviors and the road traffic flow, and the driver’s lane-changing behavior impact on the stability of the road traffic were also studied and analyzed. The study on traffic flow’s characteristics of urban arterials makes important sense to analyze the traffic capacity of the road and to improve the road safety, and provide theoretical guidance for road traffic simulation.
