In recent years, the application of SF6 gas insulated equipment are more and more widely used as the great development of the electric power industry, therefore, the inspection of insulation condition and the identification of defects become serious problems. This paper mainly studied the nature of SF6 and demonstrated the importance and feasibility of detecting the content of decomposition of SF6 gas. The measurement and testing technology, current situation, problems and limitations of SF6 gas decomposition product has been analyzed. Meanwhile, the standard gas sample has been prepared according to characteristic data of SF6 gas component given in the literature. And the checking and testing methods that detecting system has been established with the standard gas. A variety of laboratories with several types of defects and 1:1 fault simulation equipment were designed and simulated. The measurement and analysis system was established and its pressor test was also carried out, the energy discharge decomposition of SF6 gas under different voltages, temperature, pressure, density was analyzed. Finally, the components can be proposed which can be characterized with the state of SF6 gas-insulated equipment.In this paper, the component and amount of characteristic gas are input, and the type, trend and extend of insulation defect are output, training artificial neural networks based on rough sets and vector machine, and then the mathematical model of " Characteristics of gas components-insulation defect" and "Characteristics of gas components-insulation failure" were set up. Then, input another portion of the data (the component, amount or concentration of characteristics gas) and observe the output conclusion, combining with partial discharge measurements to verify the reliability of the proposed model. Finally, a preliminary revision and improvement were carried out, the new standard of SF6 gas and gas-insulated equipment defects and fault diagnosis are proposed based on this model to provide a reliable guarantee for the safe operation of SF6 gas-insulated equipment.
