With the development of our country’s economy, the power industry, as economic leading industry, has developed rapidly and the grid scale expands unceasingly. Thus, the corresponding equipment has increased sharply. The reliability of the equipment operation is the important precondition for the safe and stable operation of power grid. Insulator is an important component of the primary equipment of the power grid, so studying of its running status detection is of great importance.For insulator running status detection, experts and scholars at home and abroad have carried out a lot of research and put forward a series of fault detection methods, such as ultrasound, electric field measurement method, the leakage current method, ultraviolet imaging method and so on. In this paper, through the comparative analysis of these detection methods, advantages and disadvantages of them are pointed out. The existing methods have some disadvantages such as: detection accuracy is not high, the operation is so complex, test results are not intuitive, high workloads and high risk. An insulator resistance live detection system based on robot is designed. This paper firstly analyzes the electrical model of the insulator, and then the electrical model is applied to the EWB simulation, the simulation results show that the bypass capacitor can eliminate the influence of the AC voltage to the measurement result, and verify the feasibility of the detection principle of the measuring system. The paper introduces the hardware design and the software design of the system in detail. Adopt corresponding anti-interference measures from the two aspects of hardware and software to reduce the interference. Finally, the measuremen system is debugged by using the high voltage laboratory to simulate the field. Debugging results show that the testing system can accurately detect the low and zero insulator of the insulator string and transfer the measurement data to display and storage in the next machine-PC in real time.The system reachs the design requirements of the project. In addition, the influence of the different pollution level and different humidity on the measured results is analyzed through the experiments. The experimental results show that the higher the pollution level in the lower humidity began to affect the measured results, making the measured resistance value lower.
