The scientific research project of LiDAR technique adopted in mountainous area for hydropower engineering is illustrated in this paper. The GEMINI LiDAR equipment (made by Optech corporation, Canada) is adopted for example, several problems of LiDAR data process and applications in hydropower engineering, such as calibration and strips adjustment during LiDAR data preprocessing, quality control and quality estimation in mass production, accuracy inspection for typical projects, are respectively studied.First, the research status of LiDAR technique and the application of LiDAR products in hydropower engineering are introduced. The features of influences for LiDAR data collection in mountainous hydropower engineering area are specifically analyzed. These include GPS observation conditions, domestic traffic control, and topographic and meteorological conditions. Reasons and rules of different errors including LiDAR positioning error, scan angle error, boresight error, orientation error and error of laser divergence angle and distance error are analyzed in detail. Features and regulations of these errors are analyzed according to the features of hydropower engineering.According to practical data, a simple and available method for flight calibration is proposed by analyzing main errors which influenced LiDAR accuracy. The calibration and calculation methods for angle error of pitch, roll and heading are explained. Deficiency of the calibration for LiDAR projects adopted for mountainous area is analyzed. Available principle of calibration for different areas and strip adjustment are proposed. And the specific method of strip adjustment for hydropower engineering is summarized in detail with software TerraMatch as example.In the practice for engineering, quality management and control is an essential process. A method of Quality control and evaluation for LiDAR data processing is proposed. Finally, the method is applied in typical hydropower engineering project Dadu River and popularization of LiDAR application for city project Suining.
