The 10 kV electric power lines of railway is the electric lines composed of overhead lines and cables elected along the railway with characteristics of many spots and long lines. Its connection mode is complex, its operation environment is poor and it has more probability to be affected by the outside world. During the thunderstorm season in summer, there frequently appear faults of broken lines, punctured insulators and lightning arresters caused by lightening stroke, that do great damages to the safety of power supply of railway signals and set off the alarm bell about the stability of railway transportation.This article is mainly from the Mechanism study of thunder and lightning and its damages to the electric power lines and combines advanced experience of lightning prevention for different types of electric power lines and illustrates the effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages of different lightning prevention measures of railway 10 kV electric power lines. This article also analyzes the typical lightning faults with practices and the situation of lightning faults recorded in recent years of railway 10 kV electric power lines of a certain segment railway. Take specific lightning prevention measures and make contrastive analysis and simulation analysis about the situations before and after the implement of measures to make conclusion that whether the lightning prevention measures are valid and make sure whether the measures can achieve the actual result in practical application. Through practical operation to optimize the plans and measures, we can effectively reduce the rate of faults of railway 10 kV electric power lines caused by lightning stroke.
