With the grid gradually towards the development of intelligent and high pressure, all network of power system short-circuit current increases significantly, serious harm to the safe operation of power grid and various kinds of electrical equipment. large-scale replacement of devices of power system will bring huge manpower and material costs. However traditional FCL have low operation efficiency and poor current limiting effect, also maybe reduce the stability and reliability of power supply system. In this paper, a new type of FCL with series compensation is designed,and its working principle and performance are researched.In this paper, the harm of short circuit fault of power system is introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages of traditional fault current limiting measures are analyzed. And the conclusion is got, which saturated reactor-type FCL is the most suitable for the current condition. Then, a novel type of FCL with series compensation is proposed based on saturated reactor-type FCL, make it in the normal operation of the grid work to series compensation, in short circuit fault, to limit short-circuit current role. The basic work principle and DC control loop were deep study and analysis, the mathematical model was established, theoretically verify the feasibility. The 220kV/300km power transmission line model with the MATLAB/Simulink control system simulation platform is built, and the simulation results show that the current limiter has a good compensation effect and current limiting capability. At the end of this paper, the limit flow control circuit of voltage and current detection circuit, signal conditioning circuit, drive circuit, switching power supply and other major hardware design, at the same time, in order to match the hardware circuit to achieve the corresponding control objectives, design the system main program, A/D turn for main program, interrupt service routine and PWM pulse generating flow chart of the program, introduces the design ideas of the software.Using the new type of FCL with series compensation, effectively reducing the electric power transmission line losses, improve the power factor of the power system transmission capability and power supply system, and can significantly reduce short circuit currents in power systems, to improve system transient stability, protection of power system equipment from the harm of the impact of short-circuit current, significantly reduced equipment system maintenance and upgrades to bring economic cost.
