Recent years with the support of national policies like reform and opening up, the citizens have been living a better and richer life. Since materials are no longer in shortage, people are forming a increasingly higher standard of the living environment. Nowadays a large number of rural people tend to move to the city, which helps boost the city economy but also causes huge pressure on many aspects such as resource supply, population balance, and environment protection. The concept of eco-garden city has been widely popularized, not only in big cities but also in well-developed towns and villages, to meet the demands of citizens.So far a number of cities and towns are under city construction development, trying to reach the goal of eco-garden city. Unfortunately many cities have focused too much on the increase of green areas, but overlooked the optimization of the whole city green area system. Thus inappropriate actions have taken place in the construction process, which definitely leaves potential dangers for the future development of the city.This study did comprehensive research on the current situation of the green area system in Yangling, by looking up in references and visiting the field. Then, based on the requirements of the national eco-garden city standards, tips and guidelines for the improvement and optimization of the town green area system were concluded, which could offer examples and instruction for other small cities and towns developing green area system in the future.1. Eco-economy should be emphasized as an essential point to be boosted in the eco-garden construction process of small cities and towns. The city layout and green area arrangement should be adjusted to the blueprints for the city’s future, so that the eco-system will be suitable with the local development and the residents’ living features.2. Historical and geographical features, as well as the local culture and natural resources, should be taken good used of when a small city is under green area system improvement. The construction, with the principles of innovation, harmony, opening and sharing, should be locally characteristic and resource-efficient.3. Combing the current situation of Yangling green area system and the national eco-garden city standards, a layout was formed in the improvement of Yangling green area system which tried to make this town a town full of beautiful parks, surrounded by 3 water systems, 2 wind break loops and 3 city green corridors, with 3 axes and 4 scenic belts. This idea was aimed at making use of the local resources with scientific methods to help the town solve its environment problems and harmoniously fit in with the whole city development plan. Besides, this paper could also be referred to for multiple landscape scenes arrangement in staggered layout.4. Through the improvement and optimization of the green area system of Yangling, a five-year plan was made for the future green area design, which could give guidance for the city development in the future.
