In recent years, tire production and sales grows rapidly with the development of automobile industry in China, ranking first in the world. Radial light truck tire is one of the main specification of production and export. Approaches to the development of this kind of tire are empirical or semi-empirical method nowadays in China, which leads to long product development cycle, high cost, and low technology value-added. The application of finite element analysis (FEA) can save the time and money in tire development with developing higher quality tires.A 8.25R16 LT light truck tire FEA model was built with Abaqus in this thesis. The material parameters obtained by test, and the FEA model of the tire was verified by test, also. Based on the verified model, the distribution of stress, strain energy and interlaminar shear strain under the pneumatic load and static vertical load has been studied and weak spot has been marked. Then the circumferential difference of stress, strain energy and interlaminar shear strain were extracted as the criterion to compare the weak spots and analysis the reason of tire early damage. Finally, optimization using the criterion above was applied on the turn-up height of carcass. From the research results we can see that the tire FEA model established above has high calculation accuracy. The most likely failure regions are the turn-up end of carcass and strengthen layer end for bead area. The most likely failure region in the shoulder region is the junction region of the end of the belt2 and the belt3. Those conclusions are consistent with the practical experience. The optimization is proven that make a significant improvement by test data, also. This thesis can proved FEA data for 8.25R16 LT tire about witch little FEA job has done. The stress distribution analysis can provide a reference for the design and optimization of tire. The difference of stress before and after static load applied can be considered as an effective criterion.
