As a special storage structure, silos are widely used for storing granular materials in coal mining, agriculture, chemical industrial and the light industrial. However, certain amounts of the silo structures are partial damaged or even totally collapsed when they are in service. The damages of silo structures not only contribute to the economical loss as well as environmental pollution, but also threaten the personal safeties.Based on the finite element method and with the combinations of basic theories as well as the existed obtained experimental data, this thesis studied the lateral pressure distribution, damping effects considering different heights of stored materials and the seismic vulnerability assessments of the RC cylindrical supported silo respectively. The main woks of this thesis are as following:(1) Introducing concepts of the hypoplastic theory to simulate the mechanical behaviors of stored materials in the silo structure. Then the validations of the hypoplastic theory that used for simulating the granular materials are further confirmed.(2) Using the finite element software ABAQUS, the numerical model of a selected silo structure is established. Based on this finite element model, static lateral pressure distribution as well as the dynamic lateral pressure distribution under earthquake actions are studied. Meanwhile, how the various material parameters of stored materials influence the lateral pressure distribution are further discussed.(3) Studying how different height of stored materials influence the dynamic properties as well as the damping effects under earthquake actions. Based on the results obtained from the above study, the most favorable and unfavorable conditions are extracted.(4) Based on the incremental dynamic analysis method, the seismic vulnerability assessment of the selected silo is performed. Based on the vulnerability curves, the different level of damaged probabilities are further obtained along the height of the silo structure.
