Being an important node of the urban roads system, urban overpass has a direct influence on overall urban traffic’s function. While constructions of rainwater pipeline and pump stations as a part of the street furniture, apparently, they have been very lagged behind. With deterioration of Global climate, extreme weather occurs more frequently and increased drivers number is leading to overload of urban roads, the issue of drainage is coming out. Beijing, as the capital of China, is the centre of politics, economy, and cultural. The draining capacity of urban rainfall system does not meet speedy development of urban construction. In the case of not modifying sewage mains and rivers for removing floods, to upgrade the rainfall drain capacity and modify rain pump stations would be an effective solution to clear problems with waterlogged in the area of overpass and main street.This paper is to analyze the present situation and waterlogging problems in the area of Sunken bridge in Beijing; to study the design for upgrade of rainwater pump stations; to collect measured data in 2014 for checking the operation capability of pump station, rainwater storage tank for earlier period, storage/balancing capacity function, and to double check the effect of pollution control for rainwater storage tank for earlier period; to study the operational strategy of rainwater pumping station and storage/balancing thus providing the guidance of future operation management and system upgrades.The main studies of this paper covers the below:(1)the reasons for floods accumulation By collecting data of waterlog and historical rainfall(1)the reasons for floods accumulation By collecting data of waterlog and historical rainfall and summarizing the reasons for floods accumulation in Sunken bridge and put forward to solutions. The main reasons for floods accumulation include:-1) Speedy development of urban construction results in increasing runoff. 2) The volume of high intensity rain and instantaneous rain exceeds the existing drainage capacity. 3) The outlet of the drainage system can not be ruled out because of the high water level of the river 4) The drainage systems of suburb districts and construction areas are not completed, large number of rainwater enter the bridge area. Solutions: Upgrade the drainage system of overpass, make full use of the public space such as grasslands, squares, and build storage tanks to balance the volume of floods and the facility for control and utilization floods. Reducing the high hydraulic loading, building storage tanks and especially in overpass area where is easy to be waterlogged during rainy days.(2)Putting forward to the reforming methods for pump station based on the reason for water accumulation in overpass area, analyzing and determining standards for promoting pump station’s level, the size of rainwater storage tank for earlier period based on the data oflandmark in Beijing and historical rainfall records. Major upgrades: 1) Upgrading rainwater harvesting system, increasing the number of inlets for rainwater, Upgrading the inlet pipeline of pump station to improve the collection capacity; Improving the lifting capacity of rainwater of the existing pump stations by modifying the existing rainwater pump stations; Improving the drainage standards of overpass by building storage facilities; Improving the drainage capacity by modifying existing drainage system. 2) Main parameters: Upgrading the existing pump stations and adjusting the return period up to 5 years. New storage/balancing tanks hold the rainwater with a 5-year of return period at 50 mm; rainwater storage tank for earlier period is on 15 mm basis.(3)Collecting the measured data of rainwater pump station, rainwater storage tank for earlier period, storage tank for checking the co-effect of rainwater pump stations and storage tank, the effect of pollution control in rainwater storage tank for earlier period, and the design parameters for the guidance of future operation management and system upgrades.(4)After upgrades for rainwater pump stations, original management will not be applicable as more equipment and facilities. According to issues of upgrades, this paper puts forward to reasonable and economical operational strategies thus providing the guidance of future operation management and system upgrades.
