The damage of power distribution system due to lightning discharge is mostly caused by over-voltage. The lightning discharge in the range of two kilometers can cause overvoltage phenomenon which is a threat to the normal operation of power distribution system in the range of two kilometers. With the development of social economy and the improvement of computer, the network equipment and precision instruments have been widespread used. The refine storage unit and integrated units of precision instruments have been increasingly used. This kind of devices usually has low operating voltage, low consumption and limited tolerance ability of overvoltage. They hard to bear larger extent of the impact of the voltage or current in the process of using, while overvoltage which is easy to cause serious harm to this kind of electronic equipment in lightning discharge process. Installation of surge protection device in low voltage power distribution system is the most important measures of lightning protection, which can realize the lightning current shunt, preventing all kinds of circuit and line from bringing in, so as to reduce the damage to equipment. The surge protection device online operation appears aging failure phenomenon which can result in the loss of defense ability against the lightning strike unavoidably for a long time. In this paper we design a new type of surge protection device online monitoring system with the combination of a navy design institute in order to monitor the surge protection device whether can operate normally or not.The monitoring systems were mainly composed of data acquisition module, the data transmission module and the monitoring terminal. The structure was master-slave, the monitoring terminal as master, the data acquisition module as slaver. The ST microelectronics company’s STM32F103 was chose as core controller, the Rogowski coil was selected as interacting lightning current signal, the power carrier communication technology was used to transmitting collected data through the power line.The main research work of this article included the following contents:(1)The content of lightning overvoltage protection and research status at home and abroad were introduced, the existing problems and the development tendency were also summarized briefly.(2)Hardware design scheme of surge protection device of on-line monitoring system was proposed. STM32F103ZET6 was selected as the core controller of data acquisition module by comprehensive considering the performance of the component, power consumption, price and other factors. The circuit of JTAG, signal conditioning, clock and other peripheral circuit were designed. The simulation result was employed to illustrate the effectiveness of the designed circuit. Finally, the PCB was designed.(3) The software program of on-line monitoring system was written by C language based on the Keil uVision4 software, including the discharge current collection and storage, raising the interrupt, serial communication program, etc. The monitoring terminal upper machine was designed based on VB6.0. On C/S mode, the host sending the query information, monitoring terminal to receive, giving analytical and displaying it to PC interface, realizing the whole system communication, at the same time stored by Access database.(4)The surge protection device online monitoring system was tested. The experimental results showed that distance of power line transmission up to 200 under 9600 bps, distance up to 180 meters when the speed was 9600 bps, the performance of the system reached the design goals, stable operation.
