Pressure vessel is a confined space for storage, transport of gaseous, liquid and solid media, which is able to withstand certain pressure. It has been widely applied in the field of natural gas processing plants, refineries, chemical plants and nuclear power plants. Pressure vessel generally has the form of sphere, cylinder, ellipsoid, or a combination of these forms. In recent years, finite element method is used to calculate the stress of pressure vessel. The existing finite element method has the following two disadvantages: First, most of the studies are for circular pressure vessel, including round head and oval-shaped head pressure vessel, the research for irregular shaped pressure vessel is very few. Second, in most cases, linear numerical analysis method is used to analyze stress analysis of pressure vessel. The error between calculation result and experimental value is large, and it’s difficult to ensure the stability and reliability of results.To solve the above problems, this paper studies stress of elliptical pressure vessel using non-linear numerical analysis method. The main research contents are summarized below:(1)Nonlinear numerical analysis of elliptical pressure vessel is done. Firstly, the theory of circular shell is studied, the case of symmetrical and asymmetrical loads is respectively studied. The theory of rounded housing is then extended to the pressure vessel, the stress analysis of circular and elliptical pressure vessel is respectively done. Secondly, nonlinear numerical analysis method is studied, and the flowchart and mathematical theory of the method is introduced. A numerical example is used to verify the reliability of the non-linear stress analysis method. At last, nonlinear stress analysis of elliptical pressure vessel is calculated, and features of elliptical pressure vessel’s stress distribution are summarized and analyzed.(2)Comparison and variable loads research ofpressure vessel is done. Firstly, stress of circular and elliptical pressure vessel is contrasted under the pressure of 1Mpa, which have the same volume and boundary conditions. The result is analyzed and the differences between circular and elliptical pressure vessel are summarized. Secondly, for the situation of overloaded work, the stress of elliptical pressure vessel is studied under different pressure. The research results of the thesis have important reference significance and use value to the design of pressure vessel.
