Along with the improvement of education in China, especially the higher education: more and more people enter the university so that architects attach more importance to educational institutions. The dining activity of students in university is the most frequent. How to satisfy the contact need of contemporary students, and manifest unique culture atmosphere of the university, and build an exquisite and eomfortable dining space and environment, has become one problem existed in most of university dining rooms in China. At the same time, the increasing tense of global resources and the rising voice of sustainable development make the design of dining buildings in university, function and space organizations, relevant technologies, energy-saving technologies and materials change and update. But in a long time people just pay attention to the changing in the form of dining buildings with the development of society and ignore the indoor environments especially the thermal one, so that there are some disadvantages in the thermal environment in dining rooms.University catering building is a special kind of catering building. By doing the subjective questionnaire statistics of the indoor thermal environment of university catering building in summer in Xi’an, measuring the indoor air temperature, air humidity, carbon dioxide concentration in some universities’ restaurants with professional measuring and test instruments, and analyzing the results of the questionnaires and the measurements, the evaluation of the thermal environment of university catering building in Xi’an is obtained. In the process, some thermal environmental problems about campus catering building existing chronically in the process of actual use are found, that make campus catering building can not meet the demand of modern university life.Passive measures improving the indoor thermal environment of catering building are summarized systemically in five aspects which are planning, greening, design of building form and space, treatment of retaining structure and design of building facilities and component, and relevant suggestions for improving the indoor thermal environment are given that will guide the practice of architectural design in the future.In order to better reflect the influence of change of the interior and exterior factors on the indoor thermal environment, in the end, the indoor thermal environment of catering building is simulated by using relevant computer simulation software. Conditions of the indoor thermal environment of catering building at any time throughout a year can be obtained by dynamic analysis. According to characteristics of existing university catering building in Xi’an, combined with typical plane layout, the representative building model extracted from a collection of instances and the corresponding passive transformation models are simulated. And the n a reasonable combination of passive optimization design is summarized by contrast.
