Red mud is the pollution of waste residue discharged by the alumina aluminum industry. Generally, the average production of per ton of alumina, discharges 1 ~ 2 tons of red mud. China as the world’s fourth largest alumina producer, the annual emission of red mud is up to millions of tons. The current treatment of red mud is still the traditional database storage, a large number of red mud not only occupy farmland, and leakage of alkaline components in red mud can pollute water and soil, alkalify the land and cause the environmental problems.In this paper, a large number of discard useless waste red mud was prepared to make harmless road base material. This method does not bring pollution due to its environmental friendship. It can also effectively alleviate the problem of red mud yard. The red mud,in the process can take the place of other resources, at the same time, protect and conserve the resources. Application of red mud embankment is a good way, and has broad market prospects, is also the perfect combination of environmental protection and infrastructure construction.This study selected Henan Xiangjiang Wanji aluminium tailings and red mud as the test material. By adding different amount of additives(silica, bentonite and diatomite) and curing agent(cement, fly ash), different mix ratio tests are designed to study the internal structure of red mud curing body, early compressive strength,pH value and fluorine content of leaching solution. It proved that the optimization scope of silica, bentonite and diatomite mixing with curing agent(cement, fly ash): cement content is 10% ~ 20%, 5% ~ 15% of fly ash, silica fume and 5% ~ 15%, 20% ~ 40%, bentonite, diatomite ranged from 20% to 40%. This ratio can meet the requirements of road base technology not only in engineering, but also by the addition of silica fume, bentonite and diatomite reduced the traditional curing agent of cement and fly ash usage, the alkaline red mud curing body and the fluorine content of red mud decreased by more than 90% compared to the pure red mud.Compared with the traditional method(two ash lime, fly ash) curing technology, the innovation of this research is the introduction of additive with physicochemical properties. On one hand it reduces the dosage of curing agent in a certain extent,On the other hand, due to the fine additive(silica, bentonite and diatomite) particles, this study increases the strength of curing red mud in application to base material, improves the water resistance of red mud curing base, impermeability, smoothness, and extends the maintenance cycle of road.
