A tail rod is the joint between the body and tail of a high explosive anti-tank cartridge(HEAT).Because of the large size end and small size mid, it lead to a difficult process. Under the previous production process, most materials are removed which is a waste of energy and material. The characteristics of this process are low utilization, high costs and large energy consumption and they are contrary to the current demands requiring high efficiency, low energy consumption and sustainable development.In this paper, a new technology including local heating and warm extrusion techniques is proposed after analyzing the previous one. The finite element analytical models of the tail rot with local heating and two end forming are established based on DEFORM-3D and adopting rigid-plastic finite element method, By means of the thermo-mechanical coupling constitutive equation embedded in DEFORM-3D, forming schemes of the tail rot under different technologies are analyzed and the influences to the forming under different environmental conditions are optimized. Finally, we get a better forming result and a satisfying tail rot part. Then, the corresponding experimental schemes and molds were designed according to the results of FE simulations. The temperature extrusion process forming experiments of tail rods were carried out using lead under the similarity principle. Comparing the results of the simulation and experiment, the accuracy of simulation is validated.The new improved technology in this paper is feasible in both theory and practice situation. It not only improves the material utilization from 43.1% to 73.4% but also optimizes the properties of tail rods and enhances the production efficiency, which reduce the enterprise cost greatly and has a great economic benefits to the actual production.
