In the design of the expressway, by the structure limitation, the embankment height is generally high, the majority in the 3- 4m. However, the high embankment has many disadvantages, such as: soil amount is large, the occupation of cultivated land, destruction of vegetation, causing soil erosion; large settlement, vulnerable to storm erosion collapsemillion, increasing slope strengthening engineering quantity, the cost is high; the difficulty of the construction, long construction period; natural landscape severely damaged, can notmeet the people vision, psychological comfort, safety need. For this situation, use of low embankment expressway and shallow cutting scheme, save land resource, and take the road of sustainable development, is the future of city road construction should focus on solving problems. This paper from the traffic load effect on the research status of low embankment ofthe theoretical research, the traffic load, vehicle load, characteristics of the simulationmethods for analysis, simulation method is proposed for low embankment of traffic loadmodel. Analysis of dynamic characteristics of traffic load and road material’s dynamic characteristics, numerical analysis is carried out for the traffic load of low embankmentexpressway subgrade response. The finite element model to analyze the impact of traffic load on the subgrade settlement after construction of the road through three dimensionalcalculation. According to the research results of numerical analysis and the characteristics oflow embankment, launched the influencing factors, embankment height and reasonable to reduce of embankment height, puts forward the low embankment design principles and design process need to follow, two aspects and from the technical measures, structural measures and expounds the concrete design method can be used to reduce the height of embankment.
