With the rapid development of China’s economy, car plays an increasingly important role in all areas of the national economy. The rapid growth of car ownership leads our country’s energy security and environmental protection to facing tremendous pressure. In China,the characteristics of the energy structure are rich in coal, oil-poor and less gas,which make the quantities of crude oil and petroleum products importation large every year, so that, energy security has become an important factor affecting China’s economic development. Saving the traditional fossil resources, improving energy consumption structure, extending clean energy and diversifying vehicle energy have become the top priority of China’s automobile industry.This article first reviews the research progress at home and abroad in alcohol gasoline mixture, analyze of various physical properties of alcohol gasoline blends, expatiate the advantages and disadvantages from the physical and chemical aspects for alcohol based fuel on spark ignition engine.Secondly, engine power, economy and combustion characteristics are studied using different blending ratio alcohol-based gasoline fuel, which is the mixture of pure gasoline and alcohol-based fuel, on engine test platform. Experimental results show that the output engine torque decreases with the increasing of the alcohol-based fuel ratio in the alcohol-based gasoline fuel. Under full load conditions, fuel consumption tended to increase with an increase in the proportion of alcohol-based fuel in the blended fuel. Increasing the alcohol-based fuel ratio in the alcohol-based gasoline fuel will lead to combustion more rapidly, meanwhile increasing the latent heat of fuel vaporization. In the low blending ratio case, the impact of the two facts counteract, so the combustion characteristics of the low proportion of the alcohol-based gasoline fuel are similar to gasoline.Finally, the regular emissions of the CA4GA5 engine fueled with low mixing ratio of alcohols-gasoline(10%, 20% and 30%) under lean-burn condition was analyzed, which indicates that 20 is the best air-fuel ratio of the engine. When the engine fueled with M30 of alcohols-gasoline, without the penalty in fuel consumption, THC and CO can be reduced by 41.8% and 87.8%, while NOx remained the same. The other mixing ratio of alcohols-gasoline showed the similar results.
