Organic solar cel ls( OSCs) ha ve drawn much attention in both s cience and i ndustr y, due to the non-toxic, flexibi lity a nd potent ial advantage of low-cost. Improving t he li ght absorption in the near-infrared(NIR) spec trum is one of the valid solutions to achieve hi gh performance in these OSCs. In this paper, the OSCs with sensitivity extending into the NIR s pectr um have be en studied.Firstly, the fundamental theory and a brief history of OSCs have been reviewed. Then,the optical and el ectr ical properti es of the phase II VOPc thin films have been i nvestigated,and the VOPc and C60 based VOP c/C60 planar heterojunction OSCs ha ve been fabri cated.Since the good NIR spectrum absorpti on of phase II VOPc thin films, the exte rnal quantum effi ciency(EQE) response of t hese devi ces extend into the NIR spec trum. Though the optical transfer matr ix t heory, the li ght electrical fi eld distribut ion in the se devices has been optimized. Next, t he Alq3 thin fil m has been introduced as the cathode buffer layer to improve the performance of OSCs. By inserting a 25 nm Ag thin film be fore the Al cathode,the a ir s tabilit y and the EQE val uses in the NIR s pectr um of devices have be en improved.Finally, the tandem organic solar cel ls based on VOPc/C60 planar heterojunction and P3HT:PCBM ble nd heterojunction have been fabricated.
