By making use of computer graphics technology, virtual reality and ship can be closely combined. With the data glove and position tracker, the virtual hand can operate and control facilities in the engine room. Applied to crew skills training and school teaching, this technology can provide students with a vivid learning environment. On the premise of risk aversion and reduction the manpower, material and financial resources, students can practice repeatedly until mastering operating skills.In this paper, based on the software platform of OpenSceneGraph, Visual Studio 2008, Matlab/Simulink, SQL Server 2000 and LabVIEW, and with the main engine cooling water system as the research object, it has established the simulation model of main engine cooling water system, virtual hand interventional manipulation system in the virtual engine room and the temperature monitoring system. Besides, it has also realized the data communication between different software platforms.Aimed at the Z-propeller tug produced by Zhenjiang shipyard, according to the system decomposition theory and heat transfer theory, the thermodynamic mathematical equations of the main engine cooling water system are established, and the functions are solved by Simulink module to get the temperature parameters which can reflect the running status of devices. In addition, the above simulation results are saved in the database by means of UDP protocol, which are served as the data source of the temperature monitoring system. Besides, PID controller is introduced to the system. By making use of the critical proportion degree method for tuning PID parameters, no deviation regulation of the main engine temperature control system is realized.Meanwhile, according to the bionics, a realistic virtual hand model is established on the premise of analyzing the hand’s anatomical structure and movement characteristics. The methods of joint angles mapping and key point mapping are respectively adopted to realize the data collection and mapping of each joint of fingers and palm, then perception between virtual hand and virtual objects is realized by the intersection vector method and information the operator in the form of highlighting. For the virtual hand’s specific operational object, a method of mapping projection circle is proposed to constraint virtual hand movements, which can limit the movement of the virtual hand in the direction required by the operator. And this is also the innovation of this paper. The virtual hand technique makes the virtual operation very close to the actions in daily life. In addition, the run control instructions got by the virtual hand operating are saved in the database by means of ADO protocol, which are served as the data source of the cooling water simulation system.This system has a strong practical value. On the basis of continuously refining the models and virtual hand operating functions, it can be extended to the car, airplane, offshore and other simulator development fields. This system can provide a more convenient way for the operating personnel training.
