Under the background of rapid urbanization and motorization in our country, the historical district is often seen as the bottleneck of urban development and economic growth, with the cognition of its historical and cultural value, historical district protection and renovation gradually get attention, meanwhile, alleviating the traffic problems and making it improved also become one of the main hot spots. As a result of the limitation of district space scale and the accumulation of traditional culture, slow mode transportation became the main trip mode in historical districts. In view of the weakness on the current study of slow mode transportation planning in historical district, the traditional planning theory and method of urban slow has certain drawbacks. Taking sustainable development as the goal, the paper will study the planning methods of slow mode transportantion fitting for historical districts, through analyzing its features and characteristics, as well as taking its supply and demand into comprehensive consideration.Through the practical survey in Shuyuan historical district in Zhengzhou, Gulou historical district in Kaifeng and Dongxinanyu historical district in Luoyang, this paper summed up some common features and problems of the slow mode transportation on these historical districts, and putting forward the main contradiction of the development of the historical district as follows: the contradiction between the development of the blocks and the low service level of the slow mode transportation; the contradiction between the rapid demand and limited supply; the contradiction between infrastructure reconstruction and landscape protection. Based on those contradictions, this paper studies the constraint mechanism of the sustainable development of slow mode transportation, putting forward a traffic planning theory framework based on the carrying capacity of historical district. In order to realize the slow mode transportation planning on historical districts based on the carrying capacity, the thesis carried qualitative and quantitative research on the traffic environment carrying capacity of the slow mode transportation on historical districts, setting out from the carrying capacity of space, the psychological carrying capacity and the carrying capacity of the economy, with the aid of some mathematical models and statistical analysis softwares like Eviews and SPSS, this paper respectively established the environmental carrying capacity quantitative evaluation model of on-foot traffic and non-motorized traffic in historical districts. On the basis of the quantitative research on traffic environmental carrying capacity, the paper puts forward the concept of slow mode transportation environment pressure coefficient, and studies the threshold of slow mode transportation planning, by introducing two planning methods:demand management and demand balance. Then detailed planning framework and some planning measures and suggestions of slow mode transportation is proposed, combined with the specific problems in historical districts. Finally, this paper takes the westsouth and eastsouth corner of Luoyang as an example for the empirical analysis, the results show that the slow mode transportation planning methods putted forward in this paper is feasible, and easy to use.The study is supported by the Midwest Historic City Protection and Reconstructin of Historic District Space Transportation Planning Theory and Methods Research Fun d(National Natural Science Foundation, NO.51278396).
