Study On Context Continuation Of The Exhibtion Building Of The German Historical Museum Design

After the 45-year- division after the Second World War, Germany united again. The reunited country is full of anxiety about his history. On the one hand, Germany feel responsible to atone for the history. On the other hand, German hope that the world can see their sincere introspection. Therefore, a lot of money was used to build a variety of museums and monuments. Meanwhile, with the political center back to Berlin, the German government hopes to show the new outlook of berlin as an international city through appropriate forms. The new exhibition room of the German historical museum, which located on the side of Unter den Linden in the central area of Berlin, was built in such complex historical background. I.M.Pei was the designer of the new exhibition room and put a high value on environment and the continuation of history. Through the combination of architecture and environment. He used the modern architecture-language, new technology to build this room and show the people of the world the perfect combination of this unlimited-style room, the old museum(Zeughaus) and the environment. I.M.Pei respects the history and keep the culture. Meanwhile, he also creates new culture, and injects new vitality into the history.This thesis studies the new exhibition room of the German historical museum, and pay attention, how the new room combine the city environment, so that the culture can be kept. The study aims to find out the ideas and the way, which he used to design the new exhibition room. This is also the purpose of author. Since the new exhibition room is an I.M.Pei’s late work, a compare between the new exhibition room and I.M.Pei’s earlier works is necessary for a complete understand about the new exhibition room und the exact study of the thesis. This is also one of the study ways. The significance of this study is to provide some advices for the combination of new and old museum architectures, so that we can keep the culture.The thesis starts with 3 aspects: The development of the German historical museum, the constraint of the urban environment on the design of the new exhibition room, the style of the new exhibition room and inside and outside space. The second chapter mainly describes the history of the old museum(Zeughaus) and the historical background of the new exhibition room. The third, the fourth and the fifth chapter analyses separately the urban historical environment, the architectural image of the new exhibition room and the space. The relationship between the new exhibition room and the historical environment is always the main thread. Through the compare with the other I.M.Pei’s works, generalize the ideas and the methods about the duration of the culture, which were used by I.M.Pei to design the new exhibition room. The sixth chapter sums up the study and analysis about the design of the new exhibition building.
