Research On Universal Design Of City Square Facilities

In recent years due to the population increasement of the disabled, China’s current aging situation and the social care for them as a special group, barrier-free design, based on environmental psychology and ergonomics, is developing rapidly and has possessed more perfect design specification,which has been widely used in the city squares as well.However, the over-built of barrier-free facilities in the city squares leads to inconvenience effect on normal people. In this paper, it is put forward that the city square facilities must transit from barrier-free design to universal design concept. The concept of universal design comes into being this year, so that it’s not well-used in the urban square facility design.Firstly, this paper sums up the principles of universal design in urban square facility designs through theoretical analysis on user demand. Then, studying on foreign famous cases as the references of domestic status. Aiming at the current situation of the barrier free design of the city square facilities in China, finding the problems of the general design of the city square facilities through the domestic case study, learning to adopt the humanized design concept of the developed countries, studying and extracting the mature common facility design methods of developed countries, combining the actual situation of the square of our country and the need of the human body level, this paper extends the city square users from disables,elders, children as normal barrier-free demanders to general healthy people involved, to analyze the principles and design methods of universal design.The research methods includes: ① qualitative and quantitative methods; ② the combination of theory and practice; ③the main research method-- 3 KJ analysis.In the practical case studies, action space and time tendacy of people in city squares,the use of characteristic structure, understanding of the needs of diversification and specificity, different views, ideas and experiences of the city square are collected without choice and classified on their interrelationship. So that we can understand the situation of the using of city squares, therefore find out the key problem infecting how people using suqares. Finally, the design principle and method of universal design for the city square facilities are put forward.
