The Research On Interior Space And Decoration Of The Shanxi Merchant Courtyard

Shanxi merchant courtyards are the representative of the northern residential, and they are the result of the accumulation of riches. As the important material of cultural heritage,traditional architecture is the wealth of the Chinese people. At the same time, in an era of economic boom and information explosion, the reference and the inheritance of the traditional architectural culture is the top priority, which will help Chinese culture move towards the modern world. Based on predecessors’ research, collecting the materials and field study, the art of interior decoration in Shanxi merchant courtyards is discussed in depth. First of all, Shanxi merchant courtyards’ interior space layout and interface are affected by some objective factors, such as natural geographical conditions, social economy and construction technology of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Secondly, based on the study of custom, feudal hierarchy and traditional beliefs, the cultural and artistic connotation in Shanxi merchant courtyards have been deeply analyzed. Through the research, it can be seen that the feudal hierarchy plays an important role in Shanxi merchant courtyards’ decorative style. From residential interior space layout, to decoration pattern of theme, Shanxi merchant courtyards’ decorative style is influenced by social culture at that time. It is loaded with rich emotion and cultural connotation through the manifestation mode and the choice of decorative subjects.Shanxi merchant courtyards are a typical example of northern region buildings. They not only have the historic value, but also have the unique artistic esthetic value. Therefore,Shanxi merchant courtyards’ decorative style should be transmitted and advocated. Up to today, to combine tradition with modernity, it is a good way of designing. Based on the study of traditional decorative culture, it should be reprocessed in order to combine modern techniques with traditional forms. The goal is to use the design method in the real word,flexibly and descriptively. Only in this way, design work can arouse the national consciousness, expand traditional decorative culture and improve the level of interior design.
