As one of the most important modules in the major feed pump sets for conventional island of nuclear power plants CAP1400, feed pump SEN2101 is faced with harsh yet dynamic changing working condition. It consists of so many components, including 93 major functioning components. Feed pump SEN2101 also has very complex inner-structure. Accompanied with this structural characteristic are several flow modes, such as flow separation and secondary flow, which require high standard internal structure design, and highlight quality issues in the designing process. The performance expectation for feed pump SEN2101 and inherent demand of nuclear power industry also request high level of product function and specify high reliability of feed pump, rendering difficulties in the designing process. Design structure matrix(DSM) based new product development modeling fully incorporates the complex product internal structure and corresponding space, energy, information, and material constraints, reducing design iterations caused by strong correlation of its parts, shortening product design cycle time, ensuring product design quality.By introducing DSM methdology, this paper clarifies the dependence relationships among the variables in complex product, and establishes the feed pump component DSM model. Through DSM modules clustering of the feed pump, structural relationships analyses are also provided. The design process model of the feed pump is proposed through a two-step-mapping(component DSM–process BOM–process DSM), together with an optimization scheme.According to the optimization scheme, one 3-dimensional flow field analysis and one rotor dymamic analysis are enforced to streamline the design process, ensuring the product design quality. Based on the two level(product–component cluster) simulation, analysis of the implement effectiveness of DSM model proposed by this paper is validated.
