The invention of LED is a great progress in the lighting field, which makes the historical significance. Because of its superiority of effective、environment-friendly、long life, LED has been the first choice of "Next-generation Lighting Initiative"(NGLI) for merchants and users. In the beginning of 2001, using LED in car lighting field has drawn too much attention. In recent years, with the development of material and technology, LED’s luminous efficiency has been improved, as new generation lighting source, LED has been able to replace traditional lighting source in car lighting. LED has the feature of small in size, which has the advantage of designing compact structure and modularization lighting system. Using LED as traffic signal lights has been a long time, but as car’s head lamp is still in the experimental stage.On account of Motor cycle’s headlamp, it has raised using LED to replace traditional lighting source as motor’s lighting source, and tested its feasibility by relative standard experiment in this paper. The main study in this paper is as follows:1)The feasibility of using white LED as motor’s headlamp lighting source has been made an intensive study in photometry and colorirmetry field. The light distribution of LED is Lambertian, which can’t be used to lighting directly, so it is necessary to do the secondary design for LED optics system. Based on non-imaging optics theory, it has designed and optimized the LED collimating lens, which uses PMMA as its material and uses ZEMAX software to optimize lens parameters. Then the TRACEPRO software has been used to modulate its feasibility for further optimization. At last, based on the standard of light distribution of government standard( GB 19152-2003), five collimating lens have been combined to redistribute the light on the basis of GB.2)High power LED is small in size but has high heat, and about 80% energy diffuse in the form of heat. If using LED directly, it may cause the loss of life of LED and even burning-out. On the basis of the design of packaging structure, the thermal design of LED has been made by using reasonable finned heat dissipation structure in this paper, which can lead to the heat loss quickly. By using ANSYS modulation software, the heat dissipation structure has been designed and optimized. The results show that the structure parameters are feasible. LED can work fine in given environment.3)The performance of LED drive circuit influence LED’s life and even the entire lighting system. So the low voltage and high efficiency drive circuit has been designed in this paper, which is based on the actual demand of motor’s lighting system. The results show that the drive circuit can work well.In a word, using ZEMAX in the design of collimating lens improves efficiency greatly, which makes the design and optimization easier. The use of free-form surface not only improves the light use efficiency but also achieves energy conservation and environmental protection requirements. The results show that the lighting source achieves the design requirements.
